On rankings

The DJ Mag recently let the world know global DJ rankings based on votes by the public. Full results for last week's results can be seen here, but here are the top 10:

1. Armin Van Buuren
2. Tiësto
3. David Guetta
4. Above & Beyond
5. Paul Van Dyk
6. Deadmau5
7. Ferry Corsten
8. Markus Schulz
9. Gareth Emery
10. Sander Van Doorn

This is all very cool, but where do you draw the line between what the "public" wants to hear, and what the DJ/producer him/herself wants to play? And does this affect a DJ's/producer's work?

Feel free to discuss below, but my point is that I hope DJs and producers who do what they do because of their true love for music continue to do it for this love, and not for a number in a magazine somewhere. Because technically, if it's about a number, then everything becomes a number, and skill is calculated for a reason rather than nurtured out of pure, simple passion.

    Public opinion rankings are very subjective, if XM-BPM plays a track over and over, people will start to like it more than some others.

    I'm very surprised Kaskade is not on this list btw.

Tanzania is not Tasmania

Dear friends: Please let's stop refering to Tanzania as Tasmania. Here is why. Tanzania is located on the coast of East Africa, below Kenya. It is not origin of the the cartoon character from your childhood. Tasmania is an island which is part of Australia. The animal known to exist only on Tasmania is the Tasmanian Devil. Once again, you will see this is not the cartoon character you remember from your childhood. Let's summarize: Tanzania is not Tasmania.

Less is better than more

When designing communication systems - or any system for that matter - it seems better to start with less rather than more. Adding more than what is seen as a basic requirement risks overestimating the value of what is actually needed. It also seems easier to build on something based on new needs, rather than taking out stuff that is never used (humans seems to like hoarding).
